A Planet Gear is a component of a planetary gear system, which is a type of gear system comprised of spur gears. Planet gears are typically mounted on a movable carrier. The planet gears orbit around the sun gear and rolls against an outer gear ring, which is fixed and holds the planet gears in orbit about the sun gear. The load from the sun gear is distributed to several planetary gears, which increases the torque. The number of planet gears in a planetary gear set can vary, but there are usually two to four peripheral gears, all of the same size that mesh between the sun gear and the ring gear.
