Brake wear indicators like 556-7489 are used to indicate wear of the friction discs in Cat braking systems.
Each service brake uses an indicator pin to help determine the amount of wear on an existing service brake disc.
The oil groove depth is the most critical dimension. If the depth of the oil grooves on the brake disc is too shallow, oil flow will be inadequate. Low oil flow can cause excessive wear and abrasion.
As the brake disc wears, it increases the piston travel to engage the brake pack. This increased distance causes the notch on the indicator pin to protrude past the sleeve end.
